Have you remodeled your home or bought a new one and don’t know how to light up your modern bedroom?
Do you want to know which are the best lamps for the bedroom, and where to place them to make them look their best?
If the answer is yes, here you will find the answers, in this article I will reveal 5 tips (plus one) on how to light up a modern bedroom to the best of your ability.
Choose an ambient lighting
The design of perfect modern bedroom lighting requires particular attention in order to create a relaxing and welcoming environment, with an efficient but at the same time soft enough light to promote rest.
The first indication I want to give you is to choose a light source that acts as the main lighting in the room. The main light (also called ambient) will allow you to illuminate your room evenly, guaranteeing the right light throughout the room, ideal for example for trying on a dress or cleaning.
A chandelier or ceiling lamp is recommended as the main light source, perhaps surrounded by LED lighting of the false ceiling, recessed or track-directed spotlights.
Furthermore, a valid alternative (or in combination) to the chandelier or spotlights is the use of sconces throughout the room which represent perfect lighting solutions for decorating the walls with style and originality.
In setting up a modern bedroom lighting, these types of lamps are indispensable, as they allow you to create suffused, soft and warm effects, ideal for a room intended for relaxation.

Choose task or accent lighting
If you choose an ambient light source that is centered in the room, you will likely also need secondary lighting near your bed, which could be in the form of abat jour, wall sconces or suspensions that fall over the bedside table, and floor lamps.
This type of lighting is used in precise points where more intense light is needed, when carrying out specific activities such as reading a good book or working on the computer.
The first evaluation to make when approaching the choice of a abat jour is to establish the furnishing style of the room. If you already have a chandelier, just choose a bedside light from the same line or that matches it.
The abat jour are perfect not only positioned on the bedside tables but also on a chest of drawers. Floor lamps, on the other hand, can be used in specific points of the room such as near a mirror corner, to try on clothes before leaving the house, or near a small armchair in the room to create a fantastic reading corner.

The 5 basic tips to illuminate your bedroom
Here we are at the long-awaited moment, below I reveal 5 tips (plus one) on how to illuminate a modern bedroom in order to obtain an environment of relaxation and comfort, remaining faithful to the latest home decor trends.
1) Take full advantage of natural lights
In a modern bedroom, as for other rooms in the house, the importance of natural light should not be overlooked for many reasons.
In fact, it allows you to have the most accurate color rendering possible for your furnishings, improves your circadian rhythms by affecting some of the most important bodily functions, including the quality of sleep, and obviously saves in terms of electricity.
For these reasons it is important that the bedroom is well lit during the day thanks to the passage of light beams from the windows.

2) Match the lights to the style of the furniture
Secondly, it is important to match the lights to the style and colors of your bedroom interior.
Have you ever walked into a room and found a chandelier or ceiling lamp that was of a totally different color or style than the headboard or curtains?
Here, this is an effect that we absolutely want to avoid when constructing correct lighting for a modern bedroom.
For this reason, in the latest generation rooms, the best interior designers opt for chandeliers or suspensions always combined with the furniture with simple and linear shapes, and above all with matching colors.

3) Position the lights for maximum comfort
Another element to consider is certainly where to position the lights so that they do not disturb and, on the contrary, guarantee maximum comfort.
If you have hung a small chandelier or suspension, it is important that the lowest part of the fixture does not drop below 213 cm, and that the light from the bulbs is filtered through glass or using lampshades.
If you have chosen sconces for the whole room, the indication is to hang them so that the bulbs are 168 to 183 cm from the floor. If, on the other hand, you have opted for 2 wall lights above the bedside tables on the sides of the bed, make sure that the lower part is about 53 cm in height from your mattress.
For bedside lamps, aim to have the lowest part of the lampshade (about 45cm from the mattress) at chin level when you’re sitting on the bed, so you’ll be sufficiently illuminated, but not blinded, when reading a book.
4) Use the dimmer
Another piece of advice I can give you is to evaluate the installation of a dimmer, which will guarantee you maximum flexibility for the lighting of your bedroom, being able to raise or lower the intensity of the light as you like.
One thing you may not know about dimmers is that they don’t have to be limited to just your chandeliers, ceiling lights or pendants, but there are dimmers for bedside lamps at really affordable prices too, so feel free to explore all the options.
Finally, dimmers also allow you to consume less energy and prolong the life of your bulbs, so this is definitely a plus point too!
5) Prefer a warm light to promote rest
Finally, my fifth tip is to necessarily choose a warm light for your bedroom, in order to promote rest.
If you don’t know how to distinguish a warm light from a cold one, don’t worry, I’ll explain it to you now…
The bulbs (I recommend the LED ones) have a measurement in K, which stands for Kelvin Rating, which indicates the color temperature of the light.
The light bulbs have a range that goes from 2500 K, the warmest possible light, similar to a candle, up to 6500 K, which instead represents the coldest possible light, in terms of color temperature.
As many studies have now demonstrated, cold light (above 5000 K tending towards blue) inhibits the production of melatonin, a hormone that regulates sleep, making it more difficult to fall asleep and maintain a deep and regenerating sleep.
Therefore my choice for bedroom lighting is always in the 2700K to 3000K range because it is more flattering and doesn’t strain the eyes at the end of the day.

Extra Tip: The Venetian mirror for decorating
In addition to reflecting our image and light, Venetian decorative mirrors expand, embellish and modulate the space, creating plays of reflections that give a touch of class to the style of furniture chosen for your home.
In a modern bedroom, the mirror also performs a decorative function, in fact if chosen and placed correctly it can radically change the look of the room.
The ideal solutions for placing a Venetian mirror in the bedroom are:
- Opposite wall to that of the window, this will allow for a much brighter environment during the day, thanks to the sun’s rays that will be reflected by the mirror.
- Place it on a chest of drawers to create an original dressing table.
- Place it on the headboard of the bed, guaranteeing a scenic effect like a great “work of art” to be admired.
Each mirror can be customized in size, shape and colour, according to your taste and furnishing needs.
The Venetian mirrors thanks to their great visual impact are able to give a refined tone to the bedroom, thanks to the luminous frames that capture and reflect the light, moreover, the possibility of choosing the color of the glass for the frame allows them to be combined perfectly with any type of furniture.

What style do you want to give to your room?
Not all modern bedrooms are the same, in fact there are different styles of furniture, each one differentiated by various characteristics, I will show you some below:
Mid-Century Modern style
The mid-century modern style is famous for the simplicity in the shapes of the furniture, characterized by straight lines and refined and soft curves, by the use of materials such as wood, glass and stone, without ever encroaching on a rustic style.
This style uses mainly neutral colors, such as white, for the walls, in order to highlight all the furnishing components which instead use warmer and more gaudy shades.
These characteristics also affect the lighting, in fact for the mid-century modern style elegant glass chandeliers are chosen but with well-defined geometric shapes, often associated with floor lamps with a long metal stem that culminates in a luminous sphere.
Mid-Century Modern chandeliers are often made up of various glass components with defined geometric shapes, such as trihedrons, quadrihedrons or polyhedrons, or star tubes (glass trunks that bear the shape of a star at their ends) or strips, calla lilies or shields.
Minimalist style
The minimal style is famous for the importance that is chosen to give to the furnishings, characterized by sober, geometric and essential shapes, without leaving room for too many frills.
The minimalist style imposes the use of monochromatic and non-gaudy colors, in fact it finds its most faithful ally in white, thus also allowing natural light to be the protagonist during the day in these homes, expanding the perception of spaces.
Another feature is the importance given to the materials used, recurring is the use of metal and glass, which allows not to disturb the order and linearity of the furnishings.
This also affects the lighting, where modern style chandeliers are chosen, with well-defined lines, without decorations and monochromatic, usually white or black to make the chandelier the focal point of these large and bright rooms.
Luxury modern style
The luxury modern style is now increasingly in vogue in the bedrooms of large houses, penthouses and villas, as it is loved both by those who prefer more classic and traditional environments and by those who prefer maximum modernity in furnishings. This style is the perfect mix between classic and modern, elegant and refined.
Defined by great attention to detail, the luxury modern style makes use of custom-made furniture, characterized by clean lines, prestigious materials such as Murano glass, bronze, steel and marble, and possibly with made in Italy craftsmanship.
We also find these characteristics in the lighting of the spaces, where this is diffused and not blinding, as it must never dazzle but rather accompany the movements, creating an orderly, luminous, refined and elegant atmosphere.
Large crystal chandeliers or suspensions are therefore preferred, generally in black and gold, which have always been a symbol of luxury and refinement, which can enhance the focal point of the room, enriching it and illuminating it to the fullest.
